KAYMER OUT OF WGC
The WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship saw another upset as number 4 seed Martin Kaymer failed to progress to the last eight with only Rory McIlroy, the number 2 seed and Lee Westwood, the number 3 seed remaining from all the seeded players at this stage in the competition. Kaymer looked extremely dangerous in the previous rounds of the competition and was being touted as a possible winner of this year’s edition during the early stages but he soon followed in the footsteps of Luke Donald out of the competition. Ironically, it was Luke Donald who defeated Kaymer in the final of last year’s edition of the tournament to take the crown.
Kaymer lost to Matt Kuchar in the tournament, being played at the Ritz Carlton Golf Club in the deserts of Arizona. Kuchar thumped Martin Kaymer 4 & 3, thus, becoming the third American to secure his place in the last eight of the tournament. Kuchar, currently the world number 14 golfer became the first of the eight players to make it into the quarter finals. Kaymer failed to even stand up to the American in the match as he struggled to find any sort of rhythm throughout the face-off.
He struggled to settle down on the contoured greens of Dove Mountain and Kaymer was full of praise for the American Kuchar after the match as he saluted the performance put into the match by his opponent. Although he played poorly, Kaymer still seemed satisfied at the way he played in the earlier rounds of the tournament.
He did not, however, want to comment about the laying of the grass turf on the greens but according to sources close to Martin Kaymer, he blamed the re-laid turf for his inconsistent performance in the match against Matt Kuchar and thus, for his exit.
