Phil Mickelson criticizes Watson Captancy
Phil Mickelson cannot be accused of stabbing Tom Watson in the back for he said what he had to say in front of the captain himself. Mickelson won two of the three matches he played this week. To him the matches that he couldn’t participate in mattered more than the matches in which he did. Regardless of Mickelson’s repeatedly asking captain Watson to let him and his partner Bradley play in the match in which the captain and Webb Simpson participated in, which turned out to be a disaster, the captain didn’t pay heed to what he had to say. Mickelson concluded what he had to say in the press meet by saying that they had strayed from a formula that would let them win, unlike those of the last three Ryder Cups and they must, at this point consider applying the formula that would set them on the right track
Mickelson further added that no team member was included in the captain’s decisions. He seemed to be offended by the captain’s not paying any heed to Mickelson’s expertise. Mickelson has previously participated in 10 Ryder Cups altogether, so he has a considerable amount of experience up his sleeve. He was very much disappointed at the overall performance, for no one, excepting Mickelson, performed well in the competition, even the senior players failed to put up a face saving performance.
In addition to that, Captain Watson made mistakes in his wildcard picking and pairing, two jobs Watson himself considered to be most important. The mistake of the captain that led to the disaster was picking Webb Simpson who has a reputation of being an edgy player.
Even if those aforementioned decisions are considered to be minor errors, going against Mickelson’s decision was a big mistake.
Mickelson’s one of the greatest desires is to win a Ryder Cup. Mickelson’s age is 44, hence he has a very little amount of time left to make his dream a reality. He said that he’ll be playing for five more years hence, getting glory in Le Golf National 2018 in France will be his last chance at realizing his dream
